Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can you make homemade mozzarella sticks with string cheese?
You can, but I find the flavor and texture to be better with the block mozzarella.
2. What’s the best oil for deep frying?
I use vegetable oil, but any high smoke point oil will work, like peanut oil or canola oil.
3. Can I make mozzarella sticks in the air fryer?
I have tested this recipe in the air fryer, and I didn’t love the results. If there is even the smallest amount of cheese exposed, it will leak out and get all over the air fryer basket. The only way to prevent this is to coat the cheese in even more egg and breadcrumbs – at least three coats. If you want to try air fryer mozzarella sticks, I recommend lightly coating them with cooking spray and air frying them at 400°F for about 10 minutes or so. Be sure to flip them halfway through the cooking time.
4. Why did my cheese disappear?
Assuming you didn’t eat it all beforehand, there are several legitimate causes for this very unfortunate circumstance. The most common are cooking too long or at too high of a temperature; however, not chilling long enough or not fully coating can also result in empty sticks.

Pro Tips for Perfect Mozzarella Cheese Sticks
📌Freeze Before Frying – Don’t Skip This Step
Freezing the breaded mozzarella sticks for at least one hour helps the cheese stay firm while frying, preventing it from melting and leaking into the oil.
📌Coat Evenly for Extra Crispiness
Make sure each mozzarella stick is fully coated in flour, egg, and panko. An even coating creates a crunchy golden crust that holds up perfectly at New Year's parties.
📌Fry in Small Batches
Fry only 2 sticks at a time to avoid overcrowding. This keeps the oil temperature steady and ensures evenly fried, crispy cheese sticks.
📌Maintain the Right Oil Temperature
Fry in hot oil (around 175–180°C / 350–360°F). If the oil is too cool, the cheese sticks will absorb oil; if too hot, they will brown too fast and burst.
📌Serve Immediately for the Best Cheese Pull
Mozzarella cheese sticks taste best when served hot and fresh. Pair them with warm marinara sauce for the ultimate cheesy pull your New Year guests will love.
